Kahoot!: A Review of a Web-Based Tool
Kahoot! Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Interface
The Kahoot! website is quite busy with information, but in an organized way. There are a couple drop down items in the header of the webpage that will link you to relevant and highly sought information. As for the body of the webpage and the footer, it does include a variety of clickable links and images that can be a little overwhelming. For those venturing to the website for their first time, definitely don’t be afraid to explore the links and see all it has to offer.
Usage and Gameplay
With Kahoot!, educators can either create a game or duplicate a pre-existing game for their students to play. The educator will have to go to www.Kahoot.com to select the game and to host the experience. Students on the other hand will go to www.Kahoot.it where they will first be prompted to enter a game pin. This pin is something the teacher will have access to once the game has started.
After the game pin is entered, students are able to add a nickname and even customize an avatar which is something they definitely find enjoyment in.
Potential Downsides
Something that's becoming more and more common with a lot of web tools and apps are subscription plans. Kahoot! does have a range of plans users can subscribe to in order to access additional features. However there is a free plan that gives you access to a lot, so depending on your plans to incorporate the tool into your classroom, this basic plan will likely be all you need.
Personal Experience
I really enjoy Kahoot!, I use it on a weekly basis with my reading enrichment groups. With these groups we are collectively reading a chapter book and spend every Monday and Wednesday reading and engaging in dialogue. On Fridays we play Kahoot!. Each week I switch up the Kahoot! questions to reflect what we read during that week.
The kids really like it, and have dubbed Friday’s as “Kahoot! Friday’s.” It really is a nice way to creatively test how well students are retaining what we’ve read and get a feel of how much they are engaging with the story!
